概要
1996年リリースのJAY-Zの歴史的デビューアルバム『Reasonable Doubt』に収録された本作は、ストリートにおける「メンター（師匠）」と「プロテジェ（弟子）」の関係を映画のワンシーンのように描き出したリリカルな傑作である。プロデューサーのClark Kentが手掛けた緊迫感のあるソウルフルなビートに乗せ、当時すでにストリートの大物（ハスラー）として君臨していたJAY-Zと、同じマーシー・プロジェクト出身で当時まだ10代だったMemphis Bleekがマイクを交わす。曲の前半では、JAY-Zがかつての自分を彷彿とさせる若きハスラーを観察し、Bleekは上のレベルへ這い上がるための野心を剥き出しにする。そして後半のVerse 3では、車の中で直接言葉を交わし、ビジネスの極意とストリートの掟を伝授する対話劇へと発展していく。この楽曲によってフックアップされたMemphis Bleekは、Roc-A-Fella Recordsの最初の契約アーティストとなり、JAY-Zの最も忠実な右腕としてシーンに名を刻むことになった。
